The 70th Anniversary of the

Liquidation of the Łódź Ghetto

– A Commemoration –

August 28th marks the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Łódź Ghetto. Of the 204,000 men, women, and children who passed through the Łódź Ghetto, only 10,000 survived.

We invite you to bring your family and friends as we pause to gather and remember at this special Commemoration.


The evening will include:

  • Procession of the Memorial Candle (Ner Zikaron) and singing of Ani Ma’amim (Hymn of the Camps). Cantor Alberto Mizrahi.

  • Singing of the National Anthem of the United States of America.

  • Welcoming remarks by Union League Club of Chicago President F. Michael Covey III; Michael Traison; Roey Gilad, Consul General of the State of Israel.

  • Four Scholars – A moderated discussion of the life, culture, industry, controversies, and liquidation of the Łódź Ghetto, featuring Teresa Pollin of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Professor Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern of Northwestern University, Michael Traison, and special guest and Łódź Ghetto survivor, Charles Lipshitz.

  • Silent reflection.

  • Singing of Partisan song (Zog Nit Keyn Mol) and the National Anthem of the State of Israel (HaTikvah).

  • Light refreshments and conversation will follow.



    The evening also will feature displays of photographs, maps, and film. Books and diaries will be available for purchase.

    Registration check-in begins at 5:30 p.m. The formal program begins promptly at 6:00 p.m.

    Discounted parking is available after 4:00 p.m. for $10 at the Self-Park garage located immediately south of the clubhouse. Please pay in cash at the front desk inside the clubhouse.


    Please note that the Union League Club of Chicago has a Business Casual dress code that is strictly enforced. No denim or athletic wear, please.
